Choose tools by task

  • Payments: Alipay or WeChat Pay, set up with your own identity and card where required. Keep a physical card and cash so all payment options do not depend on one phone.
  • Rail: use the official China Railway 12306 website or app when taking trains, and save issued bookings and ID details. With an agent, check service fees and who handles changes.
  • Maps and rides: use a map that correctly shows your Chinese destinations and save both the Chinese address and pin. Access ride services through an official wallet entry or provider app, subject to what your account supports.
  • Translation: download supported offline language packs and test camera translation and large text. Have critical allergy, medicine and address details checked by a person; machine translation can be wrong.

Rehearse before departure

  1. 1

    Install from trusted channels

Use your phone’s official app store or links from the provider’s own website and check the developer name. Avoid installation files sent by strangers.

  2. 2

Sign in and test the basics

Register while you can receive texts on your usual number. Confirm you can view bookings, find your hotel and reach support. Some features work only locally; an untested button is not a verified setup.

  3. 3

    Make an offline travel pack

Save itinerary details, booking numbers, Chinese addresses, insurer and bank numbers. Keep a short copy on paper or a companion’s phone and protect files containing passport information.

03

Know the limitations

Not every mini program inside a wallet accepts foreign passports or overseas numbers, and translation may not cover every screen. Use the provider’s official website, phone or desk when verification blocks you. Avoid repeatedly uninstalling signed-in apps while travelling, as signing in again may trigger new verification.

Check before you go

Network availability, app-store regions and account features change. Test on your own device and number; an overseas app is not guaranteed to work on every network.

04

Common questions

Do I need every suggested app?

No. Choose around actual bookings and tasks. One working tool plus an offline fallback is better than duplicate apps you cannot sign into.

Can I use them without Chinese?

Some services offer English, but coverage varies across menus, help and mini programs. Rehearse essential steps and save destinations in Chinese to show staff.
