Guilin in northeastern Guangxi is known for limestone peaks and rivers that evoke Chinese landscape painting. Prioritize the Li River corridor toward Yangshuo for mountain scenery. Elephant Trunk Hill is the city's classic landmark, while Reed Flute Cave reveals karst formations underground. Around Yangshuo, the Yulong River offers fields and villages at a slower pace; allow travel time between these areas and central Guilin.

Elephant Trunk Hill
Elephant Trunk Hill stands near the meeting of the Li and Taohua rivers. Water-Moon Cave passes through its limestone base, creating an arch resembling a trunk lowered into water. Dissolution and erosion formed the opening, whose relationship with the river changes as levels rise and fall. Rock inscriptions and Puxian Pagoda add human traces to the natural shape now associated with Guilin.

Li River
The Li River crosses Guilin's limestone country, where dissolution and erosion have divided rock into clustered peaks, isolated hills and caves. Following low ground between them, the river offers successive views of different karst forms. Yellow Cloth Shoal and Nine Horse Fresco Hill near Xingping are notable examples; animals perceived on the latter's cliff are imaginative readings of natural rock patterns.
BookingChoose a cruise or raft route first, then consult the scenic area's official ticketing entry. Confirm its pier, departure and any water-level restrictions.
Admission
No single adult entry price was verified for the whole river. Route, vessel, seat class and transport inclusions must be checked per product.

Reed Flute Cave
After the underground river receded, mineral-bearing drips continued to build Reed Flute Cave's hanging stalactites, rising stalagmites and broad stone curtains. Chambers such as the Crystal Palace bring these forms together. Visitors were already exploring the cave in the Tang dynasty, leaving ink inscriptions on its walls. Looking for those written traces among the rock formations adds an encounter with people who shared this curiosity more than a thousand years ago.
Admission
No current operator or government visitor tariff was verified; cave admission and the surrounding outdoor area must be distinguished.
What to eat
Guilin rice noodles
Guilin rice noodles are the city’s breakfast. Round, silky noodles are tossed with a house brine, then topped with crisp pork, sliced beef, peanuts, pickled bamboo and long beans. Halfway through, add a ladle of bone broth if you like.
Yangshuo beer fish
Yangshuo beer fish uses fish from the Li River, pan-fried with its scales on, then braised with local beer, tomato and peppers. The scales turn crisp, the flesh stays tender, and the sauce is tangy with a little heat. It tastes best eaten beside the river.

Arriving
Guilin Liangjiang is the airport gateway. For rail, check whether your station is in Guilin or Yangshuo. If staying in Yangshuo, arrange the onward transfer instead of assuming the station is beside West Street.
Getting around
Central Guilin, Li River routes and Yangshuo are separate transport areas. Choose the cruise or raft section first, then check piers and transfers; the river’s map point is not a boarding entrance.
Where to stay
A central lakeside base suits Elephant Trunk Hill and city evenings. For countryside and riverbanks, consider separate nights in Yangshuo instead of commuting between the two each day.
Group Elephant Trunk Hill with lakeside walking, giving Reed Flute Cave its own visit and transfer time; this suits an initial city outing.
Route 2
Li River landscapes
Build an outing around your chosen river section and its departure and arrival piers. Confirm whether it reaches Yangshuo and includes transfers before booking.
Route 3
Yangshuo countryside
Choose a section of villages and riverbanks around the Yulong River with time to pause. If staying overnight, coordinate luggage and onward travel.
More planning advice
Plan Elephant Trunk Hill and Reed Flute Cave as Guilin city visits, with the Li River toward Yangshuo as a separate outing. River-corridor scenery is distinct from the city-center sights.
Choose the exact Li River cruise or raft route before checking boarding and arrival piers, departures and included transport. The river's map reference point is not a boarding location.
Check Elephant Trunk Hill's entry booking guidance through the official Two Rivers and Four Lakes–Elephant Hill channels. Review ordinary admission separately from cruises and combination products.
