Adapt the route to the season
- December–February: prepare for severe cold and icy surfaces in northern cities, while southern destinations can be damp and chilly. Winter scenery can be the purpose of a trip, but north and south need different packing.
- March–May: a useful period to consider city routes, while allowing for cold spells, wind and rain. Blossom timing changes each year, so check local seasonal notices before non-refundable plans.
- June–August: many areas are hot and wet, with tropical-cyclone warnings relevant on the coast. Place longer outdoor activities in cooler hours and keep indoor alternatives; school-holiday sights may be busy.
- September–November: many cities suit walking, but the National Day holiday changes demand sharply. Northern and high-altitude areas cool earlier; autumn does not exclude heavy rain or disruption.
Dates to watch in 2026
The published 2026 schedule lists Spring Festival on 15–23 February, Labour Day on 1–5 May, Mid-Autumn Festival on 25–27 September and National Day on 1–7 October. Shifted working days can affect neighbouring weekends; do not reuse these dates for another year.
Travel demand can rise before and after holidays, especially in homeward and return directions. Reduce city changes and secure essential transport and stays. Prepare for official booking windows at popular sights; a weekday does not guarantee availability.
A practical date-selection method
- 1
Name the priority activity
City walks, mountain hikes, skiing and beaches need different conditions. Check local opening and safe-season guidance for the activity, rather than national weather averages.
- 2
Avoid the least flexible peak
Compare accommodation and bookable transport in nearby weeks. If holidays are unavoidable, use fewer cities and more buffer days and accept that popular experiences may sell out.
- 3
Switch to live forecasts near departure
Climate is background context. Check official forecasts before travel and each day. Follow closures and local advice during flood, cyclone or heat warnings rather than entering closed areas to keep a schedule.
Check before you go
Seasonal descriptions are not forecasts or guarantees of blossoms, snow or quiet sights. Assess health, roads and permit conditions separately for high-altitude routes.
Common questions
Is everything quiet immediately after National Day?
No guarantee. Return travel, local events and demand for major sights can continue. Check availability, prices and notices for the actual city and date.
Does a rainy season rule out travel?
Not necessarily, but choose flexible plans and indoor options. Take live warnings and closures especially seriously in mountains, river valleys and cyclone-affected areas.
