Plan Chongqing

Chongqing is a mountain municipality where the Yangtze and Jialing rivers meet. Its Bayu heritage, dockside history and steep streets give it a distinctive character. See the riverside skyline from Nanbin Road, Hongya Cave's stilt-house-style buildings and the hillside lanes of Shancheng Trail. The Three Gorges Museum provides historical context, Ciqikou offers old-town streets, and Chongqing hotpot introduces the city's bold flavors.

The best of Chongqing

Chongqing: Hongya Cave

Yuzhong DistrictAbout 1.5 hours

Hongya Cave

Hongyadong adapts the form of traditional Bayu stilt houses into a multilevel commercial complex on the Jialing River slope. Entrances connect with roads at different elevations, so a floor high above the waterfront may meet ground level on the hillside. Restaurants, shops and viewpoints occupy these stacked spaces. Evening lighting emphasizes the roofs, while daylight makes the building's response to the steep bank easier to understand.

BookingA 2023 Yuzhong holiday notice directed visitors to the Hongyadong WeChat account for advance booking. Current booking and crowd-control rules need reconfirmation.

Ciqikou, Chongqing

Shapingba DistrictAbout 2 hoursFree entry

Ciqikou, Chongqing

Ciqikou prospered through Jialing River transport, pottery production and trade. Landing places, market streets and hillside housing formed a compact river town, with Baolun Temple sharing the area with shops and homes. Snack sellers are the most immediate attraction today, but side lanes reveal courtyards and residential spaces behind the main street. These help explain how commerce, worship and everyday life occupied the same neighborhood.

BookingThe district directory identifies the Chongqing Ciqikou WeChat account as the reservation entry; check requirements for your date.

Location
1 Ciqikou South Street, Shapingba, Chongqing.
Opening hours
The government's 2026 directory lists the open town area as accessible all day; individual venues, shops and temporary crowd controls vary.
Admission

Three Gorges Museum

Yuzhong DistrictAbout 2 hoursFree entry

Three Gorges Museum

The Three Gorges Museum links archaeology from the Yangtze gorges with Chongqing's urban history, tracing the river's influence on settlement, transport and culture. A notable collection piece is the Eastern Han Wuyang stone que, excavated in Zhongxian: a paired monumental structure of the type placed before tombs, with stonework imitating timber roofs and upper storeys. Such objects explain why archaeological rescue and research were essential before reservoir waters covered sites in the region.

BookingOrdinary admission no longer requires a reservation from 1 October 2025. Bring valid identification; entry may be limited at capacity.

Location
236 Renmin Road, Yuzhong, Chongqing.
Opening hours
Regular hours 09:00–17:00, last entry 16:00; closed Mondays except statutory holidays. Check notices for extensions and special exhibitions.
Admission
Ordinary admission to the main museum and permanent exhibitions. The main museum is free; some special exhibitions, services or other branch products may have separate charges.

What to eat

Chongqing hotpot

Chongqing hotpot

Chongqing hotpot is built on a beef-tallow broth thick with chillies and Sichuan pepper, often divided into a grid of cooking zones. Tripe needs only a few dips before it is ready; sesame oil with garlic cools each bite. A split pot with a mild side helps if you prefer less heat.

Chongqing noodles

Chongqing noodles

Xiaomian is Chongqing’s breakfast. The soul of a plain bowl lies in a dozen seasonings at the bottom: chilli oil, ground Sichuan pepper, soy, sesame paste and garlic water. Add mushy peas with pork or braised beef for a heartier version. Small street shops serve it in minutes.

Arrive, explore, settle in

Arriving

Jiangbei is the airport gateway. Check the full railway station name, since Chongqing’s stations are distinct. Plan your transfer around your accommodation’s riverbank and metro stop.

Getting around

Use rail transit between districts, allowing for slopes, building levels and bridges on foot. Two nearby map points can still require stairs or a change of road level.

Where to stay

Jiefangbei suits a first visit to Hongya Cave and the Yuzhong peninsula. Consider Nanbin Road for river views, checking the actual entrance and vehicle approach before booking.

Route ideas

  1. Route 1

    Peninsula and rivers

Explore from Jiefangbei toward Hongya Cave, leaving time for riverside architecture and evening views. Adjust the walk for the hills.

  2. Route 2

    Museum and hillside lanes

Learn about Chongqing and the Yangtze at the Three Gorges Museum, then choose a manageable section of hillside lanes.

  3. Route 3

    Ciqikou lanes

Give Ciqikou its own outing for older streets and buildings, then choose one waterfront stop after returning to the center.

More planning advice
  • Hongya Cave's floors connect to roads at different elevations. Specify the road, level and entrance when meeting someone or arranging a ride; daylight also reveals how the complex fits its riverbank slope.
  • Ciqikou is in Shapingba, while Hongya Cave and the Three Gorges Museum are in Yuzhong. Allow room for the move between districts, and explore Ciqikou's side lanes for courtyards and homes beyond the main shopping street.
  • Check the Three Gorges Museum's closure days and admission notices before pairing it with a riverfront walk. Reconfirm Hongya Cave's booking and lighting arrangements separately; older holiday guidance may not apply to your date.
