Plan Guangzhou

Guangzhou, Guangdong's capital, is a historic trading port and a center of Lingnan culture, Cantonese opera and dim sum. Start at the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall for intricate brickwork and woodcarving, then explore Shamian and the old city's arcaded streets. The Pearl River waterfront and Canton Tower reveal modern Guangzhou. Reserve a morning for tea and dim sum to experience an enduring part of local life.

The best of Guangzhou

Guangzhou: Canton Tower

Haizhu DistrictAbout 2 hours

Canton Tower

Canton Tower's external steel lattice twists as it rises, creating a narrow waist while participating in the structural system. The tower serves broadcasting and observation, overlooking Zhujiang New Town and the river. At the top, observation capsules travel along a track around the structure, changing the viewing position in a configuration different from a conventional vertical Ferris wheel.

BookingUse the Canton Tower website's official ticketing entry and check booking conditions for the chosen floors and experiences.

Location
222 Yuejiang West Road, Haizhu, Guangzhou, Guangdong.
Opening hours
The operator lists 09:30–22:30; confirm each observation or amusement product's hours and last entry.
Admission
Current official adult pricing was not retrieved. Observation levels and amusement experiences have different ticket inclusions.
Chen Clan Ancestral Hall

Liwan DistrictAbout 2 hours

Chen Clan Ancestral Hall

Despite its name, Chen Clan Academy began as a joint ancestral hall funded by Chen lineages across Guangdong. It also accommodated clan members visiting Guangzhou for examinations and other business. Wood, brick and stone carving, ceramic figures and lime-plaster sculpture turn beams, walls and roof ridges into scenes of opera and auspicious imagery. Now housing the Guangdong Folk Arts Museum, the building is itself a major exhibit.

BookingAdvance booking via the Guangdong Folk Arts Museum's official WeChat is required except for listed exempt groups. Enter within the booked slot; online sellout also means no on-site tickets.

Location
34 Enlong Lane, Zhongshan 7th Road, Liwan, Guangzhou, Guangdong.
Opening hours
The 2026 notice gives entry windows of 09:00–14:00 for morning tickets and 12:00–17:00 for afternoon tickets, extended to 17:30 from Apr 15 to Oct 15. Check closing days and final closing time.
Admission
The city's 2024 directory lists CNY 10 for adults. The latest 2026 booking notice does not restate pricing, so the current amount remains unverified.
Shamian

Liwan DistrictAbout 2 hours

Shamian

Shamian served as British and French concessions, with consulates, banks, trading houses and churches arranged along planned streets. Buildings preserve several European architectural styles. Bridges connected the island-like district to Guangzhou, while its geography supported separate concession administration. Identifying the buildings' former uses links their façades with the city's foreign trade, diplomacy and colonial history.

Location
Shamian Island by Bai'etan, Liwan, Guangzhou, Guangdong.
Admission
A district-wide ticket or reservation policy was not verified; individual buildings, museums and commercial venues need separate checks.

What to eat

Har gow

Har gow

Har gow is one of the four classics of Cantonese dim sum. The wheat-starch wrapper steams translucent, showing pink shrimp inside, and is pleated into a crescent. A good one has a thin, springy skin around crisp, sweet prawns.

Rice noodle rolls

Rice noodle rolls

Cheung fun is made by steaming rice batter into thin sheets, then rolling them around shrimp, beef, barbecued pork or egg and dressing them with sweet soy. Good ones are thin, silky and supple. A plate at a neighbourhood shop is a classic Guangzhou breakfast.

Arrive, explore, settle in

Arriving

Baiyun is the airport gateway; rail travelers should check the exact station on their ticket. Guangzhou is spread out, so compare onward transport for your accommodation’s district.

Getting around

Use the metro across districts, then walk around Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, Shamian and arcade streets. Canton Tower and Zhujiang New Town form a separate modern waterfront outing, including a river crossing.

Where to stay

Metro-connected Yuexiu or Liwan bases suit historic neighborhoods; Tianhe suits modern shopping districts and transport. For river evenings, compare access to a waterfront walk.

Route ideas

  1. Route 1

    Crafts and old city

Study brick, wood and ceramic craftsmanship at Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, then choose a walk through Liwan’s arcade streets.

  2. Route 2

    Shamian and the Pearl River

Walk Shamian for period buildings and river views, keeping time for a waterfront pause. Pair this relaxed outing with morning tea.

  3. Route 3

    Modern waterfront

Group Canton Tower with Zhujiang New Town river views. Reserve the tower first if going up, and choose a few evening viewpoints.

More planning advice
  • Consider the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall and Shamian together for a Liwan architecture outing. Give Canton Tower in Haizhu its own part of the plan, then check transport between areas.
  • Choose a Canton Tower ticket for the observation levels and experiences you want. Check inclusions and each activity's entry arrangements before assuming a tower ticket covers every attraction.
  • Check the Guangdong Folk Arts Museum's booking slots at the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall before fitting in Shamian's streets and waterfront. Verify access to individual buildings and museums on Shamian separately.
