Plan Lhasa

Lhasa, the capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region, is an important center of Tibetan culture and Buddhism. Prioritize the Potala Palace's architecture and art and Jokhang Temple's religious heritage. A walk around Barkhor reveals the old city, while Norbulingka offers palace gardens. Allow time to adjust to the altitude before planning demanding sightseeing days.

The best of Lhasa

Potala Palace

Red Hill held a palace in the Tibetan Empire period, but the Potala's main surviving complex largely arose from the seventeenth-century rebuilding under the Fifth Dalai Lama and later additions. The White Palace served residential, audience and administrative functions, while the Red Palace centres on chapels and the funerary stupas of successive Dalai Lamas. Tall stupas and murals occupy the Red Palace's devotional spaces, while the White Palace retains halls arranged for audiences, work and residence.

Admission
Route 1 costs CNY 200 and route 2 CNY 100; these are different routes, not a single pass. Winter and holiday concessions require separate notices.
Jokhang

Chengguan DistrictAbout 2 hours

Jokhang

Jokhang Temple originated in the Tibetan imperial period and enshrines the revered image of the Buddha at age twelve. Its courtyards, halls and roofs combine influences from Tibet and neighbouring regions. Pilgrimage around the temple forms the Barkhor circuit, while prostrations outside and offerings of lamps within show the continuing religious life of one of Lhasa's central sacred places.

BookingBook with your real name one day ahead via the Jokhang mini-program or official WeChat account. On the visit day, present the reservation code or ID and pay at the ticket office to obtain admission.

Admission
A 2025 tourism guide listed CNY 85, but the 2026 booking guide does not confirm the current charge.
Norbulingka

Chengguan DistrictAbout 2 hoursCNY 60

Norbulingka

Norbulingka served as the summer residence of successive Dalai Lamas, with palaces dispersed through gardens rather than concentrated on a single hill. Buildings from different periods preserve distinctive murals, furnishings and courtyards. Pools and trees provided a setting suited to summer residence in the Lhasa Valley, while movement between older and newer palaces reveals changes in planning and interior arrangement.

BookingBuy with ID at the east-gate ticket office or via the Norbulingka mini-program. Online bookings cover the next 10 days; groups must book at least one day ahead.

Opening hours
09:30–19:00; ticket sales end 17:30, last admission 17:50, palace halls close 18:30.
Admission
Standard adult park admission from 16 March 2026, excluding the zoo. Half-price admission applies on specifically listed statutory festival dates; concessions require eligibility documents.

What to eat

Tsampa

Tsampa

Tsampa is the everyday staple of Tibet: roasted highland barley ground into flour, mixed with butter tea and kneaded into a ball by hand in the bowl. It keeps well and travels easily, suited to life on the plateau. In Lhasa, try kneading your own with a bowl of butter tea.

A teahouse thermos and seats in Lhasa

Tibetan sweet tea

Sweet tea is black tea simmered with milk and sugar, mellow and warming, and Lhasa residents drink it all day. In teahouses it is poured by the glass or the pot, and people linger for hours to talk and sit in the sun. These teahouses are the city’s shared living rooms.

Arrive, explore, settle in

Arriving

Arrange the onward transfer from Lhasa Gonggar Airport or your rail arrival to your accommodation. Lhasa is about 3,650 meters above sea level: keep the arrival schedule light. Foreign visitors should confirm Tibet access permissions and itinerary arrangements with the relevant authorities or receiving agency before booking.

Getting around

Choose short walks in the Barkhor old town, with separate transfers for Potala Palace and Norbulingka. Check reservations, entrances and local etiquette, adjusting the order to your arranged visit.

Where to stay

The old town’s edge suits short walks; the Potala area suits a palace-focused stay. Foreign visitors should have the receiving agency confirm accommodation and transport arrangements.

Route ideas

  1. Route 1

    A gentle old-town walk

Begin with a short Barkhor walk, visiting Jokhang according to reservations and arrangements. Leave time to pause and observe everyday life.

  2. Route 2

    Potala Palace

Make Potala Palace the main visit of the day, checking opening days and your reserved time, with a light schedule afterward.

  3. Route 3

    Norbulingka gardens

Explore Norbulingka’s Tibetan gardens and palaces. Confirm reservations before adding cultural venues, keeping distant excursions for a separately arranged itinerary.

More planning advice
  • Check the Potala's available booking dates, visit routes and closure notices before scheduling other activities. Confirm Jokhang's booking and ticket-collection arrangements separately; attraction reservations do not replace checking Tibet-entry arrangements.
  • Jokhang and the Barkhor pilgrimage circuit remain part of daily religious life. Leave space for pilgrims and follow on-site visitor guidance; the temple and surrounding streets work well as one visit segment.
  • Norbulingka's palaces are dispersed through gardens, so allow time for both courtyards and interiors. Compare this layout with the Potala's concentrated hilltop complex, and check the park and palace halls' separate closing times.
