Plan Kunming

Kunming, Yunnan's capital, is known as the Spring City for its mild highland climate and serves as a gateway to the province's diverse cultures. Green Lake and nearby streets reveal daily life, while Dianchi offers broad lake views. Make a separate trip to the Stone Forest for limestone formations and local Yi heritage. Flower markets, regional produce and crossing-the-bridge rice noodles add a taste of the city.

Stone Forest

Shilin's limestone began as marine sediment before geological uplift exposed it to weathering. Water containing dissolved carbon dioxide gradually widened fractures and removed more soluble rock, leaving dense pillars, sharp pinnacles and narrow corridors. Walking among them reveals a karst landscape in three dimensions: its distinctive forms record the combined action of surface water, groundwater and uplift, rather than a single episode of erosion.

Dianchi Lake

Dianchi Lake

Dianchi occupies a basin shaped by tectonic movement on the Yunnan plateau. Incoming rivers, shoreline wetlands and open water form a connected system. Nutrient accumulation has caused serious water-quality problems, making restoration a continuing part of its history. Wintering black-headed gulls connect the lake with breeding areas farther north, adding a migratory rhythm to this large highland body of water.

Location
Dianchi waterfront, Kunming, Yunnan; visitor areas include Haigeng Park, Haigeng Dam and Haihong Wetland
Opening hours
Public waterfront areas are accessible all day; individual lakeside parks and paid activities have separate hours.
Admission
Dianchi spans several separately managed visitor areas; no single lake-wide admission fare was verified.

Green Lake (Kunming)

Cuihu developed from part of Kunming's water landscape into a public park divided and connected by embankments, islands and bridges. Wintering black-headed gulls and summer lotus growth give it distinct seasonal cycles. The nearby military academy, educational buildings and streets surround the shore, where walking, music and birdwatching remain regular parts of city life around the lake.

Location
67 Cuihu South Road, Wuhua District, Kunming, Yunnan
Opening hours
07:00–23:00.
Admission
Public grounds of Cuihu Park. A provincial government source describes free park access; commercial services and events are outside this scope.

Arrive, explore, settle in

Arriving

Metro Line 6 connects Kunming Changshui International Airport with the city. For high-speed rail, check whether your train uses Kunming South, served by Metro Line 4. Continue toward your accommodation near Green Lake or Nanping Street.

Getting around

Walk around Green Lake. Dianchi's waterfront is extensive: choose an area such as Haigeng Park, Haigeng Dam or Haihong Wetland first. Arrange a separate return transfer for Stone Forest.

Where to stay

Green Lake suits park and neighborhood walks; Nanping Street suits central dining. Choose a base around daily transport needs, remembering that Dianchi's shoreline covers multiple areas.

Route ideas

  1. Route 1

    Green Lake and city streets

Take a relaxed walk around Green Lake and eat nearby, making this a light arrival-day outing.

  2. Route 2

    Stone Forest landscapes

Make Stone Forest the main visit, following paths through limestone pillars and karst formations before returning to Kunming.

  3. Route 3

    Dianchi waterfront

Choose one waterfront area for a lakeside walk instead of rushing between several parks, and identify your return pickup point.

More planning advice
  • Plan the Stone Forest in Shilin County separately from a Green Lake city visit, allowing for the return journey. Confirm admission and internal transport individually, and avoid budgeting from the old English ticket page.
  • Choose a specific Dianchi destination, such as Haigeng Park, Haigeng Dam or Haihong Wetland, then check its entrance and dated arrangements. The lake has several distinct visitor areas with separate access details.
  • Leave time to walk Green Lake's embankments and islands and observe life along the shore. Winter gulls and summer lotus foliage are different seasonal themes, rather than sights guaranteed throughout the year.
