Suzhou is a historic Jiangnan city known for Wu culture, silk craftsmanship and scholarly gardens. Prioritize the Humble Administrator's Garden and Lingering Garden to discover how water, rocks and borrowed scenery shape classical Chinese gardens. Tiger Hill adds an ancient pagoda and local history. Walk Pingjiang Road or Shantang Street, listen to pingtan storytelling and try Suzhou-style noodle soup for a glimpse of everyday life.

Humble Administrator's Garden
Retired Ming official Wang Xianchen established the Humble Administrator's Garden, naming it through a classical reference to a life of gardening. Water dominates its centre, with halls and pavilions facing one another across the pond. Distant structures and trees extend views beyond immediate boundaries. Lotus, bridges and islands create changing angles on water, rockwork and buildings within the garden's limited area.

Lingering Garden
Lingering Garden developed under successive owners, combining halls, corridors and courtyards into a closely connected plan. Doorways and patterned windows direct views toward different features. The tall, perforated Cloud-Capped Peak is a major Taihu scholar's rock, with surrounding buildings framing it from several angles. Halls such as Wufengxianguan add detailed woodwork and spaces once used for reception and cultivated leisure.

Tiger Hill, Suzhou
Legends place the tomb of King Helü of Wu at Tiger Hill, surrounding Sword Pool and the Sword-Testing Stone with stories from ancient Wu. The hilltop Yunyan Temple Pagoda was completed in the early Northern Song and gradually leaned as its foundations settled. Repairs uncovered scriptures, ceramics and other treasures from the Wuyue kingdom. Among them was a Yue-ware celadon lotus bowl, now held by Suzhou Museum.

What to eat
Suzhou soup noodles
Suzhou takes its noodles seriously. The red broth is seasoned with soy, the white broth is light, and the fine noodles come with toppings on the side, such as braised pork, fried fish or river shrimp. Regulars order by the amount of soup and scallion they want. The first broth of the morning is the freshest.
Squirrel-shaped mandarin fish
Squirrel-shaped mandarin fish is a signature of Suzhou cooking. The fish is boned, scored and fried until the flesh curls like a squirrel’s fur. Hot sweet-and-sour tomato sauce is poured over at the table with a sizzle.
Arrive, explore, settle in
Arriving
Rail is a practical starting point for a Suzhou visit. Suzhou and Suzhou North are separate stations: compare onward transport to your base and gardens before choosing a train.
Getting around
Walk within garden and old-street districts, using metro or taxi across town. The Humble Administrator’s Garden, Lingering Garden and Tiger Hill are separate visits rather than one compact walk.
Where to stay
The Pingjiang Road area suits old-town atmosphere; Guanqian Street suits city amenities and transport. For old-town accommodation, check vehicle access and how far luggage must be carried.
Focus on the Humble Administrator’s Garden, then see canals and lanes on Pingjiang Road, with time for a rest or a pingtan performance.
Route 2
Lingering Garden and Shantang
Group the Lingering Garden with Shantang Street for a western old-town outing, comparing garden composition with canal-side commerce.
Route 3
Tiger Hill
Allow a separate visit for Tiger Hill’s pagoda and landscaped slopes. If adding another garden, choose a contrasting style to keep the experience varied.
More planning advice
Give the two gardens different focuses: look for pond edges and views across water at the Humble Administrator's Garden, then framed windows, connected courts and Cloud-Capped Peak at Lingering Garden.
Give Tiger Hill its own section of the trip for the hill and pagoda. Sword Pool's legends and Yunyan Temple Pagoda's architectural history offer a different focus from the two gardens.
Before fixing the order, check official booking and last-entry information for each of the three sights. Leave room to explore slowly instead of planning arrival around closing time alone.
