Zhangjiajie in northwestern Hunan is known for Wulingyuan's quartz-sandstone pillars and the region's Tujia heritage. Prioritize Wulingyuan: Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain and Golden Whip Stream offer contrasting views of peaks and valleys. Tianmen Mountain adds a natural arch, cliffside walkways and mountain panoramas; Huanglong Cave reveals an underground landscape. These are separate scenic areas best planned across different days.

Wulingyuan
Wulingyuan’s quartz-sandstone pillars formed as uplifted sedimentary rock was eroded along fractures and blocks collapsed away. Tianzi Mountain, Yuanjiajie and Golden Whip Stream reveal different aspects of this landscape: upper viewpoints look across clustered towers, while valley paths pass beneath sheer walls. Trees on summit remnants and plants rooted in cracks survive in pockets of thin soil among the exposed stone.
Admission
A 2023 provincial notice describes a four-day package with admission, shuttle buses, three cableways and a lift, alongside other ticket options. Its historical price is not treated as current.
Yongding DistrictAbout 7 hours
Tianmen Mountain
Tianmen Mountain’s defining feature is Tianmen Cave, a huge natural opening piercing the cliff. Dissolution of limestone, widening fractures and collapse helped create this rock arch. Cableways, a winding mountain road and escalators through the mountain overcome its steep changes in elevation. Near the summit, paths follow the cliff face, with glass sections allowing a clear view into the drop below.
BookingTickets depend on the chosen route. A government response says eligible children still need a named free ticket collected with their own valid ID on the day, accompanied by a ticketed adult.
Admission
Current adult route fares are unverified. A 2025 government response describes admission and internal-transport concessions for children under 14, excluding non-transport activities.

Huanglong Cave
Huanglong Cave combines several levels of chambers with underground rivers and walking paths. Its best-known stalagmite, the slender “Sea-Calming Needle,” grew through gradual deposits of calcium carbonate carried by dripping water. A boat journey along the Xiangshui River and walks through higher chambers reveal both sides of cave formation: water dissolves passages in limestone, then deposits mineral formations when conditions change.

Admission
A 2022 provincial tourism guide states that the cave boat ride was included in admission; 2026 prices and package inclusions remain unverified.
What to eat
Sanxiaguo
Sanxiaguo is a dry pot from the Zhangjiajie area. Three main ingredients, such as pork intestine, tripe and cured pork, go into the pot together and are fried hard with chillies and green garlic. It keeps cooking at the table, growing richer as you eat.
Kudzu starch snack
Kudzu is a wild root common in the Wuling Mountains. Its starch, white and fine, is stirred with hot water into a translucent paste or made into jelly and noodles with a silky texture. Locals often eat it as a cooling snack.
Arrive, explore, settle in
Arriving
Hehua Airport serves air arrivals; rail travelers also need an onward transfer to the city or Wulingyuan. Choose the base district before arrival so your transfer matches the day’s scenic area.
Getting around
Wulingyuan, Tianmen Mountain and Huanglong Cave are separate scenic areas with their own entrances and transport. Within Wulingyuan, choose routes and scenic transport before treating map points as a walk.
Where to stay
Stay in Wulingyuan for pillar landscapes, or in the city for Tianmen Mountain and rail connections. A longer trip can use both bases, with luggage and transfers planned for the move.
Choose a suitable Wulingyuan route around areas such as Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain, checking scenic transport and the return entrance.
Route 2
Valleys and cave
Allow another outing for valley paths such as Golden Whip Stream. Huanglong Cave is a separate addition to choose according to transport and energy.
Route 3
Tianmen Mountain
Give Tianmen Mountain its own outing, confirming your purchased route, meeting point and ascent and descent arrangements.
More planning advice
Arrange tickets and transport separately for Wulingyuan's core scenic area, including Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Tianmen Mountain and Huanglong Cave. Match accommodation and pickup points to the area you plan to visit.
Choose Wulingyuan stops by viewpoint: Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain reveal the arrangement of pillars, while Golden Whip Stream offers views upward from the valley. Use those preferences to balance summit and stream walks.
Compare cableway, lift, shuttle and Huanglong Cave boat inclusions item by item. Historical package descriptions provide context; confirm the current official product before choosing.
