Identify the destination number
- 1
Read the masked number
Check the displayed country code and final digits. Is this the wallet, bank or hotel-platform number? Inserting a new SIM does not automatically update those records.
- 2
Check format and support
Avoid entering the country code twice and follow the app’s instructions for leading zeroes. If it accepts only +86 mainland numbers, do not invent a number; seek an official alternative or staffed channel.
- 3
Use the latest code
Wait for the countdown rather than triggering repeated requests and rate limits. Check filtered messages; delayed older codes may already be invalid.
Check dual SIM and roaming
- Keep the original-number line enabled and check for carrier service, not just Wi-Fi. SMS delivery depends on the plan, roaming partnerships and account status.
- Assign mobile data to the travel SIM. Set original-line data roaming, call handling and automatic data switching using your carrier’s charges and device instructions. Turning off data roaming is different from disabling the line.
- Test the line with an ordinary text or call. If only one bank’s codes fail, contact that bank rather than repeatedly changing networks. Save pending-order details before restarting or toggling flight mode.
If delivery still fails
Use alternatives actually offered by the provider, such as an already configured banking-app approval, support or a desk. For urgent purchases use cash or a backup card; for attractions ask about a staffed passport-booking option. Keep your original number until refunds, deposits and return travel are settled.
Check before you go
Verification codes control access to your account. Do not share them with drivers, hotel staff or unsolicited “support”. Confirm SMS and roaming charges with your carrier.
Common questions
Does Wi-Fi make bank texts arrive?
Not necessarily. Ordinary texts generally need carrier service; some device/carrier combinations support texts over Wi-Fi calling, but this must be enabled and available.
Will a temporary Chinese number fix everything?
No. Banks still use their registered number and services may require matching identity data. Change security numbers only through the provider’s formal process, which may involve a waiting period.
