01

Before you start

  • Have internet access, access to texts on your registration number, your own physical card and identification if the app requests it.
  • Keep your physical card and some cash as backups. Wallet setup, issuer approval and merchant acceptance are separate checks.
02

Register and add a card

  1. 1

    Install and register

Install Alipay from your phone’s official app store and register with your own number. An overseas number can be used before you arrive in China.

  2. 2

    Find Bank Cards

Open Me → Bank Cards and enter the information requested. Eligibility depends on the card network and issuer.

  3. 3

    Complete the requested checks

If identity or bank checks appear, complete them inside the app or the bank’s official flow. Never give a helper your verification codes.

03

Paying at a merchant

When a merchant displays a QR code, use Scan; confirm the amount if you must enter it. When the cashier uses a scanner, show your payment code instead.

Review the merchant, RMB amount and selected card before confirming, then check the transaction record. If a payment is pending, check its status before trying again to avoid paying twice.

04

If setup fails

  • No text message: check your country code, number and ability to receive texts. This is separate from card eligibility.
  • Card or payment declined: note the exact error and contact in-app support or the issuer as appropriate. Do not repeatedly submit conflicting identity information.
  • For interface images, open the official setup guide in Sources. This page summarises documented instructions and does not claim an in-person setup test.

Check before you go

Menus, card eligibility, fees and limits can change. Follow the current app and issuer prompts; a linked card is not a guarantee of payment.
