Three tiers with explicit assumptions
Assume two adults sharing one twin/double room, with accommodation divided per person. Exclude international/intercity travel, visas, insurance, shopping and healthcare. A solo traveller must budget the whole room cost, and peak dates or prime locations can greatly exceed these examples.
- Lean example: accommodation ¥150 + food ¥90 + local transport ¥30 + activities ¥50 = ¥320 per person/day. Plan around public transport and free activities, while checking real room prices.
- Moderate example: accommodation ¥300 + food ¥150 + local transport ¥70 + activities ¥100 = ¥620. This leaves room for some taxis and paid visits, but still replace allowances with actual prices.
- Flexible example: accommodation ¥600 + food ¥300 + local transport ¥150 + activities ¥200 = ¥1,250. These are spending allowances, not promises of a hotel category or private guide.
Calculate the whole trip
- 1
Count nights and days separately
For 10 days and 9 nights, multiply accommodation by 9 and daily spending by the days actually used. Adjust partial arrival and departure days rather than mechanically counting every day in full.
- 2
Price every intercity leg
Check actual dates, classes and fares on 12306 or the airline, then add station/airport transfers. Mark undated legs “quote pending” rather than inventing a national flat rail fare.
- 3
Separate prepaid costs and deposits
Separate prepaid amounts, pay-on-arrival costs and refundable deposits to avoid double counting. Leave card capacity for authorisations. Set a personal contingency, for example 10–20% of variable costs; this is a planning suggestion.
Common omissions
- Seat selection, checked bags, transport inside attractions, cancellation fees, guides and late-night transfers. Replace “from” prices with the final total.
- Foreign-card wallet charges, bank FX fees, ATM charges and exchange-rate changes. Promotional fee waivers can expire; do not assume every payment stays free.
- Refundable and non-refundable holiday rooms can differ substantially. Locking uncertain entry or transport plans to save a small room amount may increase the total loss.

Common questions
Why not quote fixed fares for every rail route?
Train, class, date and fare products affect what is actually bookable. Record quotes for your own legs and leave room for alternatives.
Should I carry my whole budget in cash?
No. A budget is total planned spending; cash is one backup alongside cards and wallets. Follow cross-border cash rules.
