Dunhuang is an oasis city at the western end of Gansu's Hexi Corridor, where Silk Road exchanges produced remarkable Buddhist art. Prioritize the Mogao Caves for murals and painted sculpture spanning many dynasties. Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake reveal the meeting of desert and oasis. Yumen Pass or Yangguan adds frontier history, with separate transport needed for these distant sites.

Mogao Caves
Mogao’s caves were commissioned over centuries by monks, officials and other patrons. Murals and painted sculpture turn Buddhist teachings into visual narratives while preserving details of clothing, musical instruments and travel. The Library Cave, discovered in 1900, contained manuscripts and paintings invaluable for studying medieval Dunhuang’s daily life and beliefs. Across the caves, changing figures, colours and compositions also record artistic exchange along the Silk Roads.
BookingBook a named time slot through the official Mogao Caves Reservation WeChat account or mini program; reach the Digital Exhibition Center 30 minutes early rather than driving directly to the caves.

Crescent Lake (Dunhuang)
Crescent Lake lies between the dunes of Mingsha Mountain, its groundwater-fed curve contrasting with the surrounding desert. Wind moves sand and gradually reshapes the ridges; under particular conditions, sliding grains can also produce sound. Falling groundwater once threatened the spring, prompting work to restore recharge and manage nearby water use. The coexistence of dunes and water now depends partly on continued conservation.

Yumen Pass
The Small Square City at Yumen Pass retains the outline of a rammed-earth fort despite centuries of erosion. In Han times, this was a frontier checkpoint on the route from Dunhuang to the Western Regions. Nearby walls, beacons and storage sites supported inspection, provisioning and warning duties. Excavated wooden documents record soldiers, supplies and official correspondence, revealing the busy administrative life behind the pass celebrated in poetry.
Admission
The government confirmed a half-price winter policy for 1 December 2025–31 March 2026. That period has expired; current admission and shuttle fares remain unverified.
What to eat
Donkey meat with yellow noodles
Donkey meat with yellow noodles is Dunhuang’s signature dish. The noodles are mixed with alkaline plant ash and hand-pulled long and fine, golden and springy. Slices of braised donkey meat and a savoury sauce complete the bowl.
Apricot drink
Apricot drink is made by simmering dried Dunhuang apricots and chilling the sweet-sour liquid. In the desert heat it is the local way to cool down, perfect after a day at the Mogao Caves or the singing dunes.
Arrive, explore, settle in
Arriving
Dunhuang Mogao Airport serves air arrivals. For rail, check whether you arrive at Dunhuang or a transfer station elsewhere. Mogao, Mingsha dunes and distant passes require separate routes and transport.
Getting around
Walk locally in town and arrange transfers for outlying sights. Do not squeeze distant sites such as Yumen Pass into a short Mogao outing; confirm return transport and entrances.
Where to stay
The town center suits meals and pickups; the Mingsha area can suit a desert-focused stay. From either base, confirm transport to the Mogao visit meeting point.
Anchor your schedule to the Mogao reservation, checking the visitor center and visit procedure. Leave time afterward to absorb the art and history.
Route 2
Dunes and Crescent Lake
Plan a separate desert outing around weather and current access information, arranging the return to town in advance.
Route 3
Passes and Silk Road history
If time allows, choose a distant route to Yumen Pass or Yangguan. Treat road travel as a major part of the outing and limit the number of stops.
More planning advice
Set your Mogao booking slot and visit product before arranging desert sights. Regular and emergency visits have different coverage; confirm your arrival point through the official booking information.
Give Mogao time for its paintings and sculptures, and Crescent Lake time for the dunes and spring. Treat them as distinct visits, selecting rides or sightseeing shuttles separately according to your interests.
Yumen Pass lies northwest of Dunhuang, while Mogao is to the southeast. Arrange outlying transfers separately and confirm the named site's coverage when booking: Yumen Pass and Yangguan are distinct ruins.
