Plan Changsha

Changsha, Hunan's capital, combines Huxiang culture, Yuelu Academy's scholarly tradition and modern revolutionary history with lively evenings and bold food. Prioritize Hunan Museum's Mawangdui Han tomb collection, then explore Yuelu Academy and the Xiang River scenery at Orange Isle. Older neighborhoods such as Chaozong Street and local snacks, including stinky tofu, reveal another side of the city.

Orange Isle

Orange Isle is an elongated alluvial island built by sediment in the Xiang River. It divides the river into channels and forms a key part of Changsha's mountain-river-island-city geography. Mao Zedong's student years and his poem Changsha gave it further significance, commemorated by the youthful portrait sculpture at the southern end. Walking along the island reveals both the river landform and its development as a public park.

Yuelu Academy

Yuelu Academy was founded in the Northern Song. In the Southern Song, Zhu Xi travelled from Fujian to debate questions from the Doctrine of the Mean with Zhang Shi, who taught here. Their celebrated encounter brought different schools of thought into direct conversation. Lecture halls, the library and the Confucian temple preserve spaces for learning, keeping books and ceremony. The academy's educational history later became part of Hunan University's own lineage.

BookingBook by real name through the official Yuelu Academy WeChat account up to four days including the visit day. Bring the original booking ID; passports and specified travel permits are accepted. The visitor rules exempt seniors over 65 presenting a physical Chinese ID from advance booking.

Hunan Museum

The Mawangdui Han tombs preserved extraordinary details of life more than two thousand years ago. A straight-hemmed silk gauze gown weighs just 49 grams; silk manuscripts contain medicine, astronomy and philosophy; lacquerware and textiles accompanied the dead. Xin Zhui's preserved body continues to inform research into Western Han life. Hunan Museum brings these finds together, revealing clothing, knowledge and beliefs about death through one aristocratic family's burial grounds.

BookingReserve by real name on the museum website, official WeChat service account or Alipay mini-program up to five days ahead, excluding the current day. New-date tickets release at 20:00. Visitors from outside mainland China can use passports or other accepted documents; bring the original ID used for booking.

Opening hours
Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–17:00, last admission 16:00; closed Mondays, with separate public-holiday and extended-opening arrangements.

Route ideas

  1. Route 1

    Xiang River and Orange Isle

Enter Orange Isle in your reserved slot, then walk by the river for the sculpture and views of both banks. Leave time for breaks and your return.

  2. Route 2

    Yuelu Academy

Make the academy the main visit, taking time for its lecture halls, library and Confucian temple. Continue through the nearby university area if you enjoy walking.

  3. Route 3

    Mawangdui and city flavors

More planning advice
  • Check Hunan Museum's available visit dates and entry instructions before scheduling the Mawangdui displays. The recorded notice directs visitors through Martyrs Park's west gate; reconfirm the access route before setting out.
  • Yuelu Academy and Orange Isle use separate official booking channels. Check slots and ID requirements for each, including the academy's instruction to bring the original document used for booking.
  • Orange Isle is long and narrow, so choose your walking extent around river views and the sculpture at its southern end. Check sightseeing trains or performances separately from public park admission.
