Sanya, at the southern end of Hainan Island, is known for tropical bays and beach holidays, with opportunities to explore Hainan's local cultures, including Li traditions. Start with Yalong Bay for sand and sea, or Wuzhizhou Island for an island outing. Tianya Haijiao offers coastal landmarks and Nanshan a Buddhist cultural landscape. Choose a main bay as your base, since distances between resort areas are substantial.

Yalong Bay
Yalong Bay has a long, curved beach framed by low hills and headlands, with resorts lining the landward side. Its pale sand includes shell and coral fragments broken down by wave action, while offshore coral communities provide habitat for fish. Walking, swimming and marine activities focus on the shoreline; higher slopes behind the bay reveal its full curve and changes in water colour.

Tianya Haijiao
Tianya Haijiao is known for inscriptions such as “Edge of the Sky” and “Corner of the Sea” on coastal boulders. Hainan’s distance from China’s historical heartland once gave these phrases an association with remote exile; later visitors connected them with travel, love and reunion. Weathering and waves rounded the granite blocks, whose inscriptions can be followed along the beach as traces of successive visitors.

Nanshan Temple (Sanya)
Nanshan Temple is a modern Buddhist monastery within the Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone, completed in 1998 in a Tang-inspired architectural style. Its halls face the sea from a hillside. Guardian figures occupy Renwang Gate, while a bell tower, scripture repository and climbing side corridors connect courtyards at different levels. Zhao Puchu wrote the temple’s name and the inscription “Haitian Conglin,” referring to its sea-and-sky setting.

What to eat
Coconut chicken
Coconut chicken is Hainan’s hotpot. Fresh coconut water forms a clear, sweet broth for pieces of Wenchang chicken. The meat is tender, dipped in a sauce of sand ginger, lime and soy.
Qingbuliang
Qingbuliang is Hainan’s cooling dessert: coconut milk or light syrup over red and mung beans, barley, jelly and fruit such as watermelon and pineapple. It is best eaten ice cold on a hot day.
Arrive, explore, settle in
Arriving
Phoenix Airport is the air gateway, with rail useful for travel within Hainan. Sanya’s bays are spread out: confirm whether your base is in Sanya Bay, Dadonghai, Yalong Bay or Haitang Bay before arranging a transfer.
Getting around
Focus on your accommodation’s bay and use vehicles for other districts. Plan Nanshan and Tianya Haijiao separately from eastern bays, checking ferry and weather arrangements for island trips.
Where to stay
Sanya Bay suits access to town, Yalong Bay suits a beach stay and Haitang Bay suits accommodation-centered relaxation. Decide how often you want excursions before repeatedly switching bays.
Give your chosen bay time for rest and the beach. Follow local notices, weather and operator arrangements for swimming or water activities.
Route 2
Western cultural landscapes
Choose Nanshan or Tianya Haijiao as the focus of a western outing, limiting repeated journeys across several bays.
Route 3
Island or city addition
For Wuzhizhou Island, confirm ferry and return arrangements first. For a gentler pace, choose town and seaside walks as the additional outing.
More planning advice
Choose accommodation around your main interest: a Yalong Bay beach stay or visits toward Tianya and Yazhou. Check journeys to Tianya Haijiao and Nanshan rather than treating every area as a walk from the hotel.
Yalong Bay covers a broad bay area. Check the public beach, hotel facilities and forest park separately, then confirm access conditions and service charges for your chosen entrance and activities.
For Nanshan Temple, check admission coverage and entry slots for the surrounding Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone. Passport holders should confirm purchase and entry procedures with the operator; the recorded online terms do not establish that process.
