What to ask before booking

  • Say that you hold a foreign passport and confirm the property can process check-in and registration on your arrival date. This checks practical readiness, not a universally required “foreign-guest licence”. Save the written response and cancellation terms.
  • Check ID requirements for every guest, late-arrival time, desk coverage, deposit methods and occupancy. For an after-midnight arrival, make clear which night you are booking to avoid a no-show.
  • A confirmed apartment-platform booking does not mean police accommodation registration is complete. Ask whether it is handled as hotel or non-hotel registration, who submits it and what address documents are needed.

Hotel check-in and refusals

  1. 1

    Show original documents

Show your passport and requested entry information at reception. Check room charges, deposits and included services, confirm registration is handled and keep booking and deposit receipts.

  2. 2

Ask a manager to check the process

If staff do not know how to enter a passport, ask a manager to check with local police. Show the government response linked below about foreign-guest qualifications. Focus on resolving the stay rather than a late-night confrontation.

  3. 3

Document and secure a place to stay

Ask the booking platform to arrange another stay or refund and retain the reason, booking and messages. Consult local 12345 government services or the police registration office if needed; use emergency police for danger or threats.

03

Friends’ homes and other non-hotel stays

From 21 September 2026, NIA rolled out online registration nationwide. You or your host can use its government-service website, NIA 12367 app or WeChat/Alipay mini program. Local police offices remain available and online registration has the same legal effect.

Prepare your passport, actual address and the address/host details requested by the system. Submit and check the result rather than saving only a completed form. Check registration requirements again when moving; contact local police promptly if online submission fails.

Check before you go

Accommodation registration is separate from the arrival card, visa and booking. Online access does not remove the 24-hour requirement or extend your legal stay.

Common questions

Does one night at a friend’s home count?

The rule covers residing or staying outside hotels. Do not assume an exemption because it is one night or free; you or your host should register as required.

Must I also register online after hotel check-in?

Hotels normally report stays through their own registration process. Confirm that this was done; the nationwide non-hotel channel is for accommodation outside hotels.
